7“Everything rises and falls on leadership,” says John Maxwell. If this statement is true, then how do we ensure that those in leadership understand leadership and then lead as is expected of them? Assuming that those in leadership do understand leadership and are actually leading, how then do we ensure that we have prepared leaders to take over from the current crop of leadership and whose responsibility is it any way?

Elaine Biech observes that the most valuable investment any organization can make is in the development of its future leaders by ensuring that leaders possess competencies to achieve their organization’s strategy, continue to mature their organizational culture, and inspire their workforce. Elaine further notes that the expectation of essential leadership skill standards continues to climb. Senior leaders’ positions have become more challenging, requiring a broader range of job experience and a surprisingly long list of competencies.
